UK Drivers have missed out on over £2 million of Savings in Driving Licence Renewal Error
Despite online renewal being cheaper, quicker and more convenient, around a fourth of licence renewals were sent by post or through the Post Office.
The figures show that of the 2 million licence renewal applications received by the DVLA between April 2020 and March 2021, 23 percent were postal or Post Office applications. To renew your photocard licence online costs £14 and you can do it at home or on the go. You’ll usually receive your new licence in as little as five days. Online customers can also track their application progress on the website.
Applying for your new licence by post costs £17 and takes much longer, especially with the additional delays caused by the COVID pandemic. If you apply at a Post Office, it’ll cost you £21.50, but you should receive your new licence quicker than by a postal application.
Julie Lennard, DVLA Chief Executive, said, “Our online services are the quickest and easiest way to deal with DVLA and customers usually receive their driving and vehicle documents in just 5 days.”
By law, you must renew your photocard driving licence every 10 years. Before your current licence expires, you’ll get a reminder from the DVLA.
Remember to only use www.gov.uk when using DVLA’s online services. A number of third-party websites appear to represent the DVLA, but charge extra fees for services which are free or significantly cheaper on the genuine DVLA website. These third-party sites have no connection with the DVLA.
